Born in Toronto in 1953, Brenda came to Richmond Hill at age 11.
Brenda is a graduate of Langstaff Secondary School; Seneca College, King Campus (1974) in Applied Communications Media; Atkinson College, York University where she attained her Bachelors degree in 1988, and then her honours degree in Social Work from Atkinson College, York University in 1997.
Brenda has always had an interest in social justice and environmental causes. Running for elected office was encouraged by family, friends, and other politicians.
First elected in 1991 as a Public School Board Trustee, Brenda
has distinguished herself as a successful front runner in many levels
of municipal politics. She was elected and re–elected in 1994
and 1997 as Ward 2 Councillor for her hometown of Richmond Hill,
Ontario.
In 1996, Brenda was elected by her peers as Chair for the Large Urban caucus for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO).
In 2000, Brenda championed the protection of the Oak Ridges Moraine and her efforts were honoured by the Toronto Life Environmental group, the In Celebration of Women organization, and the then-Leader of the Official Opposition for the Province of Ontario, Mr. Dalton McGuinty. This culminated in Brenda being elected to Council for the Region of York and appointed Deputy Mayor for the Town of Richmond Hill.
Re-elected as a Local and Regional Councillor for Richmond Hill in 2003 and 2006, Brenda continues her work as a Regional and Local Councillor and Deputy Mayor of Richmond Hill.
Since 1997, Brenda has been elected and re–elected as a Director
of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Over that time
she has held executive office as Chair of the Ontario Regional Committee
and was elected Vice President at Large. Among her many accomplishments
with the Federation, Brenda has also served as Vice-Chair of the
Finance and Intergovernmental Arrangements Committee, Vice-Chair
of the International Affairs Committee and Chair of the Social and
Economic Development Committee for the Federation.
Married to an executive in education, Brenda and her husband enjoy swimming, dancing, watching Coronation Street and holding lively discussions of current events with their four grown children and their friends around the dinner table.
