Tribute to our Seniors
Brenda Hogg, Regional and Local Councillor
Town of Richmond Hill
Over the Christmas holidays, I had the opportunity to hear the Seniors’ Choir at the McConaghy Centre on Yonge St.. Although I have heard them before, this time they seemed more polished, with more singers and much more enthusiasm. It may be the result of the demands placed upon them by their conductor, Joan Flynn. She admits to being a strict taskmaster and although she keeps smiling as she leads them through their paces, she directs with her hands in a ferocious way.
The audience also had several opportunities to participate with Joan lording (can I say that at Christmas?) over their volume and timing before she finally proclaimed, "That was good. We have some lovely voices out there."
It felt good to be part of their audience and part of their production. It was my only opportunity to sing the praises of the season.
Solo performances were given by Jean, Jack, Normie, Rita, and Elka among others. Each had a distinct style and several times I noted that there was absolute silence from the audience; always a measure of rapt attention and appreciation. Some of the songs were accompanied with a short theatrical performance or dance. One Hawaiian dance by three older women proved positive that the gentle sway of hips need not be reserved for the young—only the young at heart.
On several occasions I noted that audience members needed to brush away a tear or two. Perhaps Christmas and the New Year bring out such emotions. My tears were joyful. What a tribute to our community to have so many active and enthusiastic citizens. Thank you, Joan, for a wonderful performance!
